Don’t Worry, Feminists Don’t Want to Cut Off Your Penis; They Just Want Equality
Perhaps the fear held by some men is that Nazi feminists will set up gulags and gradually, man by man, try the entire male population for acts of rape. Naturally, trials will be determined by “feelings” and the presiding judge will be whoever is on her period at the time.
In reality, what most feminists (women and men) want is a civilized conversation about rape culture. We’re not talking about forced castrations or man-shaming, or any of that bullshit. Men can be awesome feminist allies as soon as they let go of their egos and consider that they, by being men, are inherently born into privilege, and they simply can’t fully empathize with what it’s like to be a woman born into a world where the odds of sexual violence and discrimination are automatically stacked against you.
When conservative politicians attempt to categorize rape as being “real” or “legitimate,” what they are essentially doing is believing the best of men and the worst of women.
Women are lying temptresses consumed by wedding fantasies and the desire to attract hapless men to the honeypots between their thighs and then BAM! they ensnare a husband. For example—and we swear, this is the only Twilight reference in this book—Kristen Stewart did what most twenty-two-year-olds do: be a jerk and mess up a relationship that wasn’t going to last anyway. She cheated, and the world collectively lost its mind. She received death threats, lost work, and at the time of this writing, is enjoying being the spokes-model for many slut-shaming campaigns. Conversely, Chris Brown beat the crap out of his girlfriend and was rewarded with Grammys; Charlie Sheen abuses women and gets a show on FX; and Ashton Kutcher cheats and gets Charlie’s old show! It’s the circle of being the worst.
While the instances of men being falsely accused of rape are tragic (each and every one of them), as a collective problem, false accusations of rape pale in comparison to the issue of rape itself. Rape is a huge problem as it’s documented right now, and assaults are extremely underreported. According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), 54 percent of sexual assaults are not reported to the police, and 97 percent of rapists will never spend a day in jail.15
One of the reasons 54 percent of rapes are not reported is that when rape survivors hear people like Candy Crowley and Poppy Harlow defending rapists on the news, a part of them thinks: Maybe it’s my fault or I know it’s not my fault, but I can’t handle being discussed on national TV as though it is, and then they don’t report it.
If CNN is supposed to be a source of objective news, and “objective journalists” not only pardon rapists for their crimes, but also invite know-nothing conservatives onto their airwaves to spout ridiculous falsehoods about women and their bodies, then of course rape survivors become miseducated and self-blaming.
On Citizen Radio, we have this crazy idea that America should trust women.
